Lecturer, School of Medical Science

Chemistry Education

I teach chemistry and physics in two large first-year classes: 1001MSC Essentials of Chemistry and Physics (course lecturer and laboratory convenor for 800-930 students annually); and 1015MSC Chemistry of Biological Systems (Course Convenor, course lecturer and laboratory convenor for 560-600 students annually).

These courses are designed and enacted using an integrated format (interactive lectures, scaffolded tutorials and laboratory classes) to develop students’ foundational knowledge of the discipline, practical competence in scientific methodology and self-regulation skills. A key challenge is to transform what has been traditionally a transmissive large-class lecture format into an active and interactive learning environment. For example, opportunities have been created for students to check their understanding with peers (Your Turn sessions in lectures) and Learning Activity Management System (LAMS) activities (interactive lecture notes that contain text, images, video clips, and MCQs for students to check their understanding) have been developed and implemented.

Laboratory Teaching

The laboratory practical program for the Foundation Year chemistry courses  comprises experimental laboratory sessions of 2 hours each. The purpose of the laboratory program is to provide students with hands-on lab experience and the opportunity to acquire practical skills and competencies. The laboratory program also supports the lecture program and each of the experiments is timed to coincide with the relevant lecture material, as far as possible. Experiments include:

  • Measurements

  • Identification of Anions

  • Oxidation and Reduction Reactions

  • Volumetric Techniques

  • Gases and Boyle’s Law

  • Pendulum Motion

  • Acids and Bases

  • Aldehydes and Ketones

  • Synthesis of Aspirin

  • Extraction of Lipids from Egg Yolk

  • Glucose Concentration in Drinks

ePortfolios & Employability
School of Medical Science

The School of Medical Science on Griffith University's Gold Coast campus offers five very distinctive undergraduate degrees covering the practice of medicine, biomedical sciences, medical laboratory science and allied health.

It also offers specialist postgraduate studies and research opportunities across a wide range of medical research fields.

The School of Medical Science has long been recognised as having some of Griffith’s best teachers and innovative programs to ensure students reach their potential.
